I love California like a layer fake frosted with sugared violents, largely for its lack of history alleged, I believe, by Jim Carroll. He wrote that in the eastern U.S. it seemed you couldn't go a mile without running across some little historic plaque commemorating Something happening years ago on that very spot, but that Cali had few such markers. Except that if you count in the Spanish years and the natives' years before that, California has about as much of a history as anywhere else, plax or no plax, so the concept of Shiny Nu-Frontierness is itself part of the fake, thus making it oddly more true. and more lovable.
